Workers vs. Queen – Expression of Genes in Wasp Brains
Dr Seirian Sumner is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Zoology, London. Dr Sumner was awarded a Fellowship to undertake research the expression of genes in the brains of wasps when they are workers and then queens, and found they express different genes when they do each job, linking genes to behaviour. The For Women in Science Fellowship enabled her to pay for a technician to do vital and sometimes time consuming molecular biology work.

She says winning the award was prestigious, but it was the timing which was so crucial. "The Fellowship made the impact of having two children less severe. There is a big gap in my CV publications-wise now, so it was recognition just at the right time."
