'Amazing Creatures' – Social Lives of Protozoan Parasites
Dr Sarah Reece is a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. Dr Reece was awarded a Fellowship to undertake research on the social lives of protozoan parasites, in particular the role of apoptosis in the transmission of malaria. The For Women in Science Fellowship enabled her to employ a part time graduate research assistant to further understand these 'amazing creatures,' the parasites. Commenting on the award, Dr Reece said, "Different types of science require different types of funds. For evolutionary biology, research is normally rate-limited by salary for researchers and not by the costs of equipment or consumables". In her spare time, Dr Reece grows tomatoes in her greenhouse, goes hill walking and renovates property.
