Song Birds: Evolution of Animal Communication
Dr Nathalie Seddon is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford. Dr Seddon was awarded a Fellowship to undertake research on the evolution of animal communication. Dr Seddon's research focuses on antbirds, a diverse family of tropical birds in which songs of both sexes function in resource defence and mate attraction. Dr Seddon used her award to help build aviaries and begin preliminary experiments at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama, as well as to fund her travel. Dr Seddon says that, "with international research it is always a struggle to achieve a work life balance. The L'Oréal For Women in Science award has allowed me the flexibility to begin thinking about starting a family of my own while I continue to pursue my career."
